International Perspectives on Science Education Research in Multicultural and Multilingual Contexts

2021
This chapter aims at promoting more reflective and agentic approaches to science education research. Through the voices of five science education scholars from different parts of the globe who bring with them diverse cultural backgrounds, gender expressions, and theoretical frameworks, we instigated a conversation about the complexity of science education in Catalonia, South Africa, Lebanon, the Republic of Korea, and the USA. We critically consider ways to conceptualize and conduct science education research that is more culturally and linguistically relevant in superdiverse classrooms. These include reorienting research methodologies to focus on equity, diversity, and social justice; participating in educational policy construction and implementation processes; and promoting and sustaining meaningful and productive collaborations with all stakeholders.
