Design by simulation of the UT array inspection of a nozzle with a flexible probe: Definition of 3D trajectories and focusing parameters

2013
The inspection of 3D components such as a nozzle weld requires overcoming the difficulties due to the complex geometry. The use of flexible array has been proven to be an efficient solution allowing to compensate the effect of the varying profile and to ensure the quality of the ultrasonic beam transmitted in the material along the probe scanning. The definition of the trajectory of the probe and the focusing parameters (parameters introduced in the delay law calculations) is allowed by using a flexible probe on this evolving 3D geometry (saddle) compared to a solid wedge probe. In this communication we present a study performed in the case of the inspection of a nozzle weld using a flexible array. This study aims at ensuring an efficient coverage of the region of interest around the weld based on software tools. These tools allow calculation of an efficient trajectory and the focusing parameters. A strategy has been implemented in order to minimize the number of delay laws applied to reach this coverage....
