The article presents the state-forming concepts of three well — known Ukrainian politicians - V. Vinnichenko, D. Dontsov and V. Lipinsky. These political leaders belonged to different ideological currents, and as a result were irreconcilable opponents. The purpose of the work is to identify the reasons why it was impossible to synthesize their worldviews in the important period of Ukrainian history - the creation of an independent state. The article demonstrates how the ambitions of well-known personalities, transcending national interests, have led to the collapse of the state, which could have occurred through the revolution. In addition, this article presents the connection between several generations of Ukrainian socialists. The article describes the reasons for the popularity of socialist ideas in Ukraine at that period of history. Explaining the reasons for the uncompromising adherence to socialist ideas of the Chairman of the government of the Directory V. Vinnichenko. The emphasis is placed on the importance of building an independent state, defended by V. Lipinsky, D. Dontsov. The harmfulness of the autonomous views of V. Vynnychenko for Ukraine at that time was proved. The conclusion about the necessity of uniting the nation is made - what V. Lipinsky actively called for.
