Integrating Information Literacy into the Academic Curriculum and Nursing Practice

2018
Abstract This chapter examines how information literacy (IL), as a key component of evidence-based practice (EBP), is integrated into nursing education and professional practice. Barriers to implementation in both settings are identified, ranging from attitudes and lack of time to technology challenges and organizational culture, with lack of information literacy skills as a common theme identified throughout. Instructional methods and examples of IL integration in the curriculum are discussed, along with the librarian’s role in these endeavors. In the discussion of professional practice, a gap is identified between nursing education and practice. In light of the barriers to the adoption of EBP as identified in the literature, the authors discuss methods for implementation, focusing on organization culture shifts and the development of structures and programs to support EBP, such as Clinical Inquiry Councils and EBP fellowships.
