THE D(p,2p)n REACTION AT 3.8 TO 5.0 MEV

Publisher Summary Recently some groups have measured the excitation function for the reaction D(p,d)p, where d is defined as a singlet p-n system, at proton energies between 7 and 17 MeV. The measurements of the excitation function of the D(p,2p)n reaction near its threshold (3.3 MeV) are very interesting. This is because there are often exist resonance states near its break-up threshold in light nuclei, for example, the excited states of 4 He at 20.2 MeV (near p+t threshold) and 21.4 MeV (n+h threshold) and that of 7 Li at 7.48 MeV (n+ 6 Li threshold)). A deuterated polyethylene target of approximately 20 kg/cm 2 was bombarded with protons from the Kyoto University tandem Van de Graaff accelerator. The outgoing protons were detected in two silicon detectors of surface barrier type, both placed at 6.2 cm from the target center. In the study of the reaction of D(p,d)p at proton energies between 7 and 17 MeV, the phase space is calculated by taking into account the finite geometry and energy resolution of the experimental system and the energy loss of particles in the target using a Monte Carlo method.
