In 1849, Duchenne (de Boulogne) described "muscular atrophy with fatty transformation," 1 * and a year later Aran, using Duchenne's material, elaborated the description and named the condition progressive muscular atrophy (P.M.A.). 2 In 1860, Duchenne added his unsurpassed clinical depiction of "progressive muscular paralysis of the tongue, palate and lips," now known as progressive bulbar palsy. 3 In 1868 Charcot delivered a lecture at the Salpetriere on the association of progressive muscular atrophy
