Use of CdZnTe detectors in hand-held and portable isotope identifiers to detect illicit trafficking of nuclear material and radioactive sources

The use of large volume CdZnTe detectors for hand-held isotope identification devices for field use is described. It is shown, that if used with well-designed identification software, the many advantages of these detectors prevail over their main disadvantage-their low detection efficiency.
