Effects analysis on hydrocarbon reduction efficiency of a beta zeolite catcher in gasoline engine during cold start

2021
Abstract In this work, a new post-processing device-HC catcher was designed. The device used the same carrier as TWC, and was coated with HC adsorption material, that is, beta zeolite molecular sieve used in this study. The cold start test was conducted on the gasoline engine test bench. The HC catcher was installed at the exhaust manifold outlet. The difference between the HC amount in the exhaust before and after the installation of the HC catcher was compared. It was found that at the beginning of the cold start of the gasoline engine, the effect of the HC catcher was obvious, and there was almost no HC emission. With the increase of exhaust temperature, the trapping effect of the HC catcher decreased. The adsorption capacity of the HC trapping material was limited, and it was also affected by the temperature. Then the Material studio software was used to carry out the molecular simulation for studying the adsorption of the HC simulated molecule (propene) on the beta zeolite at different temperatures. The high temperature had an obvious effect on the adsorption capacity of beta. After about 300 °C, the adsorption capacity was at a very low level.
