The article is devoted to the scientific substantiation of psychological and pedagogical bases of formation of readiness of the teacher education institutions to innovative activity in the conditions of modernization of education. The article considers the main trends in the training of teachers for innovative activity; the components of the innovative competence of the teacher; identify indicators of readiness of the teacher to innovative activity; the professional and personal qualities of the teacher are necessary for the implementation of innovative activities. The authors highlighted the peculiarities of the educational process in the conditions of innovative activity.
