Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment

2010
Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is an important cause of blindness, occurring as a result of a full-thickness break in the neurosensory retina. Management options include conservative treatment, laser demarcation, pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckling, and pars plana vitrectomy. Indications for individual treatments vary according to the type of retinal break. Primary retinal reattachment rates of 85–90% can be achieved with modern surgical techniques, vitrectomy being the most widely used treatment. Proliferative vitreoretinopathy is the most common cause of treatment failure. Loss of vision occurs in 1% of patients despite multiple surgeries.
