The c-axis structures of stage 1 and 2 fluorine-graphite intercalation compounds prepared from highly oriented pyrolytic grahite and natural graphite flake
1995
Abstract The c -axis structures of stage 1 and 2 fluorine-graphite intercalation compounds prepared from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite and natural graphite flake have been analyzed by intensity calculation of (00 l ) diffraction lines for the disordered staging structures, based on the stage 2 structure with almost ionic fluorine atoms, stage 1 structures with semi-covalent fluorine atoms and stage 1 bi-intercalation structures with almost ionic and semi-covalent fluorine atoms. The experimentally obtained X-ray diffraction patterns have been qualitatively reproduced by the present calculation. The results show that fluorine-graphite intercalation compounds easily take the disordered staging structures. This is because of the small polarizability and highest electronegativity of the fluorine atom, which give rise to the slow diffusion of intercalated fluorine atoms in graphene layers and the formation of CF bonding.
