Electrochirurgical instrument reinforced with gas, integrated.

2005
An electrosurgical instrument (10) for providing an ionized inert gas to a surgical site, comprising: a shell (11) having a proximal end (12) and a distal end (14), wherein the distal end has an opening ( 17) to emit ionized gas; an active electrode (350) located adjacent to the distal end of the frame, with the electrode adapted for connection to an electrosurgical energy source (300); a receptacle (25) for seating a cylinder (100) of pressurized inert gas therein; wherein the frame houses a tube (60) that channels the pressurized inert gas close to the electrode; at least one actuator (31) that drives the flow of pressurized inert gas from the cylinder to the proximity of the active electrode through the tube and which drives the electrosurgical energy supply from the electrosurgical energy source to the active electrode to ionize the pressurized inert gas through the opening to use a surgical site; characterized in that: the active electrode is positioned between a distal end of the tube and the opening; and wherein the electrosurgical instrument is portable handheld and the frame includes the receptacle;
