Acute polymyositis with subcutaneous oedema

Abstract Three patients are described, presenting with a short history of excruciating muscle pain, weakness and extensive subcutaneous oedema, and who were found to have an acute inflammatory myopathy. Histological examination of the muscles showed considerable muscle necrosis with a relatively sparse inflammatory response and little evidence of regeneration. The place of this disorder in the spectrum of polymyositis is discussed.
