Implementation of course assessment methods in universities

2013
Assessment is an instructional process of collecting information on learning of students. It is divided into different methods based on the extent to which it simulates performance in the real world, measures higher learning outcomes, requires demonstration of multiple skills, require time, and uses scoring strategies. The main purpose of this study was to examine the implementation of course assessment methods. Quantitative survey research method was used to collect data. On the study, 1340 students from fields of specializations of Engineering, Social Science and Natural Science were participated. To gather data, 11 items of assessment type were presented to be responded on a four point Likert scale. Mean and Standard Deviation were calculated and differences in implementation of assessment methods were tested by one-way ANOVA. Scheffe pair wise multiple comparison was used to compare the significant main effect. The result of the study revealed that there was a tendency to implement alternative method of assessment in Wollega University. There were significant differences among fields of specialization in implementation of alternative methods in favour of Engineering field of specialization. It is suggested that Wollega University would work to ensure the implementation of alternative assessment methods in all fields of specializations.
