[What should the physician's role be in regulating fertility and sex behavior (a contribution for discussion)].

1985
: Progress in modern medicine has resulted in a drastic reduction in infant mortality. Almost 95% of children live through their 1st year, after which their lives are as safe as those of adults. The civilized countries of the world restrict the birth rate in order to prevent overpopulation, maintain high standards of living, and give women the time and opportunity to pursue professional careers. Due to birth control and family planning, Czechoslovakia has no overpopulation problem. Under these circumstances, a gynecologist should not assume the role of a priest or a judge by condemning a woman who wants to terminate her pregnancy. Instead, physicians should inform, advise, and, in some cases, act as family doctors. Birth control should not inhibit sexuality. Gynecologists should not consider sex a sin and should be deeply involved in various sex education programs, including programs for the selection of safe and effective contraceptives.
