2016
Objective: To describe the feeding methods mostly used in the transition from gavage to breastfeeding in new born preterm infants participating in the second stage of the Kangaroo method of a maternity reference at high risk of Alagoas. The advantages and disadvantages of each method were discussed. This is a descriptive study based on a report of lived experience. Experience Report: The most commonly used alternative methods of feeding were: use of a glass, translactation, relactation and the finger-probe technique. It was evident that at the time of withdrawal of enteral feeding, the use of glass associated with breast feeding was the most used technique. In order to properly used these approaches, there should be a focus on continuous follow-up, health education and encouragement for active participation of mothers in the care of their children. A number of advantages and disadvantages were identified in all methods. Comments: We highlight the importance of the systematic and methodical use of these techniques and of the use of appropriate assessment criteria to manage each case. It is pointed the importance of a welcoming assistance with expanded focus, considering not only the baby but also the family. In addition, special focus should be given to the strengthening of a network to support this binomial in order to maintain a satisfactory period for exclusive breastfeeding at home. There is a need for studies with proper methodological designs to compare the use of transitional feeding methods in premature infants and their impact on long-term development.
