Antenatal care for postbariatric women

2020
Abstract Along with the dramatic increase in obesity worldwide, there has been a significant rise in bariatric procedures performed on morbidly obese, reproductive-age women. While current evidence suggests an improved metabolic profile with an overall improved obstetric outcome after bariatric surgery, these procedures are not without risk. Nutritional deficiencies and surgical complications may arise that can lead to adverse perinatal outcomes. A multidisciplinary approach to prenatal care and a high index of suspicion for recognizing complications related to these procedures is required to optimize obstetrical outcome in this patient population.
