LESSONS TO BE LEARNED FROM INDIGENOUS ARCHITECTURE

2000
Out of necessity, early man used available materials to create shelter from the elements. Building forms evolved that responded practically to local climate conditions. These early builders achieved a timeless architecture rooted in solving problems. In recent times, advanced communication, transportation, and technology have allowed us to be impractical with the knowledge that artificial means are available to overcome inefficiency. Modern buildings often use inappropriate architectural forms and materials based on fashions originating in other climates. This results in unnecessary problems that are difficult and costly to remedy. Thoughtful study of indigenous architecture could lead to the design of contemporary buildings that would be suited to their climates.
