Seed transmision of Alternaria alternata causing blight of brinjal

2013
Brinjal cultivar BR-112 was attacked by alternaria blight and more than 80% crop plants were infected. Eight samples of brinjal seeds yielded seven external and internal mycoflora viz., Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, Curvularia sp., Fusarium sp., Penicillium sp., A. niger and Drechslera sp. by agar plate and blotter methods. Seed transmission of these mycoflora was studied, only A. alternata and Fusarium sp. were pathogenic on brinjal. Initial symptoms were earlier due to A. alternata (on 6th day) compared to Fusarium sp. (on 8th day) on plants. Out of seven fungicides, hexaconazole proved best fungicide followed by copper oxychloride and mancozeb in reducing disease severity in brinjal; among botanicals neem baan was better than neem oil.
