ALASKAN EARTHQUAKE DAMAGES TEXAS HIGH PLAINS WATER WELLS

Damage to water wells, and fluctuations in surface water and groundwater levels occurred in the Southern High Plains region of Texas during the Alaskan earthquake of March 27, 1964. The initial shock, recorded on the seismograph at Texas Technological College at 9:44 P.M., CST, set wells to pumping sand, caused groundwater fluctuations up to ±0.75 feet, and rippling of surface reservoirs.
