Effect of harvesting stages and BAP on post-storage keeping quality of cut stems of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev)

Stems of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev) cv. Reagan Emperor were harvested at three stages of bud development, viz. S1- when the ray florets had attained diameter of 1.0–1.5 cm, S2- when the buds were half open and S3- when the buds were 3/4th open and were stored under wet refrigerated conditions for up to 21 days. The stems harvested at S1 exhibited maximum floret longevity which decreased with increase in storage duration. Prolonged storage duration also decreased floret longevity, hastened yellowing of leaves but the flower diameter was not significantly affected. Cut stems harvested at half open stage (S2) were also wet-stored in solutions of BAP for 6, 12, and 18 days. BAP significantly delayed yellowing of leaves and the bioregulator at 50 mg/l concentration was most effective. BAP at this concentration also marginally improved floret longevity.
