Ongoing and Future Directions of Research on Higher Education for Sustainable Development

The chapter reviews the historical origins of contemporary thinking on higher education and sustainable development, and also notes that much work in universities that is clearly education, and equally clearly related to or focused on sustainable development, takes place with no reference to the body of work known by its originators as Higher Education for Sustainable Development. While this observation is in no way intended to diminish that body of work, the chapter suggests that there is a need for interdisciplinary engagement by educationalists, and, more perhaps more importantly, for a more developed meta-theory of how ESD knowledge develops, and how it relates to other knowledge.
