Method and apparatus for separating immiscible liquid/ liquid mixture

1993
PURPOSE: To promote an effective separation of a discontinuous phase by arranging coalescing elements which coalesce a first liquid and a separation elements which separates droplets of the first liquid from the first liquid in superposed and fluid communicable relationship. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of coalescing elements 20 are superposed above a plurality of separation elements 30. A liquid mixture enters a housing from a liquid mixture inlet 14, flows as indicates by an arrow and then enters each coalescing element 20 from an inlet part 18. After the liquid mixture passes in the inside-out direction through a wall 22 of the coalescing element 20, the mixture travels through a wall 32 in the outside-in direction to each separation element 30. At this time, only a continuous phase enters the separation element 30, and most droplets of discontinuous phase are dropped down to a bottom part 36 arranged between separation elements 30 to be removed from the housing through a discontinuous phase outlet 34. On the other hand, the continuous phase liquid exits each separation element 30 from an outlet 28, travels to an outlet chamber 26 and further exits the housing through a continuous phase outlet 24.
