Managing performance under pressure

2016
Abstract This chapter presents the rationale for implementing a comprehensive approach (primary, secondary, and tertiary level interventions) to building resilience and managing psychological well-being in organizations. Within this framework practical recommendations are provided that help both individual employees and organizations develop good habits that sustain longer-term health and productivity as well as enable people to perform under pressure. This includes guidance on how the key physiological, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive signs and symptoms of acute and chronic states of strain and distress can be identified and managed. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the manager in creating the appropriate environment for employees to apply their skills and strengths in a manner that is energizing.
