Morphological Fractal Characteristics of WC in Ferrite-Cemented Tungsten Carbide before and after ESR Process

2001
The fractal of metallographic structure for original WC and electroslag remelted (ESR) WC has been studied in terms of “Sierpinski Carpet” of fractal theory. The fractal dimensions of carbides after ESR are 1.881 5 and 1.974 5 respectively. The higher fractal dimension may characterize the new fractal structure of carbide W Fe C which is in the form of small grains and the metallographic component is composed of initial carbide and educt carbide. The results suggested that the fractal theory can be applied to this kind of material.
