An Unusual Synthesis of Phthalaldehyde.

Abstract A variety of oxidizing agents convert 5-hydroxy-4,5-dihydroisobenzo-furan into phthalaldehyde. Other oxidizing agents produce both phthalaldehyde and its 4-hydroxy derivative.
