In order to optimize the adjustment of the width of the strand, the invention proposes that a width correction .DELTA.b is calculated in dependence upon a volume flow regulating determined difference and is outputted as a manipulated variable to a first actuator for adjusting at least one narrow side of the continuous casting mold. Furthermore, a change in height is .DELTA.h the casting level h in dependence of the width correction .DELTA.b calculated. Casting level h and volume flow V. be controlled by controlling a closing element.
