An international research team has borrowed a computational approach from biology to shed new light on the origins of the Indo-European family of languages. Using models originally created to trace the origins of viral pathogens, such as avian influenza, during outbreaks, evolutionary psychologists report on page 957 of this week9s issue that they have found decisive support for the hypothesis that Neolithic farmers carried their language and agricultural know-how with them as they pushed out from Anatolia.
