Bariatric (Weight-Loss) Surgery and the Eye

2019
Abstract Various types of weight loss surgery (WLS) are explained. Nutrients, which are likely to be deficient preoperatively, are discussed. Nutritional consequences of WLS are outlined. Examples are given of various nutritional deficiencies, which have been reported to impact ocular function. These include vitamin A, zinc, thiamine, and copper. Nutrients, which can be deficient postoperatively and have potential ocular effects, are also discussed. Although WLS improves diabetic markers, ongoing surveillance for retinopathy is needed. Postoperative vitamin and mineral supplementation is recommended.
