Dynamic response of a defect pile in layered soil subjected to longitudinal vibration in parallel seismic integrity testing

2019
Abstract The parallel seismic (PS) method is a nondestructive test technique for detection of reinforced concrete pile defects. The method can be employed to detect severe defects of piles and for existing piles supporting a superstructure. In this paper, a defect pile-fictitious soil pile coupled model is established considering three-dimensional effect of surrounding layered soil. An analytical solution is developed for the dynamic response of soil around and beneath the pile. The developed solution is then employed to investigate the effects of pile defect and layered soil condition on the dynamic response of surrounding soil. A parametric study is conducted and the results are utilized to establish practical guidance for the application of the parallel seismic method in pile integrity testing.
