Performance of multilayer glass and BIPV façade structures

2021
Abstract The object of the research described in this chapter is evaluation of the thermal response of advanced glass facade structures with improved energy performance during cooling of the building. Two types of glazed facade structures were analyzed: a six-pane glazing structure upgraded with a building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system with and without phase change material (PCM) inserts, and a BIPV double-glazed facade with transparent triple-glazed interior structure. Such facade structures are particularly relevant for nonresidential buildings and for all-glass-facade buildings, whether new or refurbished. The diurnal transient thermal response of constructions under investigation was evaluated using a computational fluid dynamics technique for extreme daily summer climate conditions for Athens, Ljubljana, and Stockholm. Validation of the numerical modeling is given for the BIPV glazed facade with and without PCM inserts. A parametric study on position and melting point temperature as well as ventilation intensity was carried out. Energy performance indicators were developed to evaluate the cooling load and potential of increased efficiency of electricity production using PV cells.
