Photonic Crystal Devices for Sensing — Focusing on LiDAR Applications —

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is drawing attention along with the topic of autonomous vehicles, but conventional LiDAR is large and expensive due to its mechanical scanner. Therefore, compact nonmechanical solid-state LiDAR, exploiting flash illumination, optical phased array, and slow light grating have been actively developed. This presentation reviews the status of the mechanical and nonmechanical LiDAR development and introduces the challenge to realize a solid-state one using Si photonic crystal slow light waveguide.
