A surgical suture comprising: a core (301, 401, 605) extending throughout the same between a first end and a second end; a plurality of sets of first and second projections extending from the core, wherein the first projections (204, 302, 402, 601) extend toward the first end of the suture and the second projections (206, 304, 404 , 602) extending toward the second end of the suture, wherein the first projections (204, 302, 402, 601) may overlap and substantially cover a distal end (207) of the respective second projections (206, 304, 404, 602) when the suture is drawn through tissue by the second end.
