Green approaches for the extraction of bioactive from natural sources for pharmaceutical applications

Abstract Extraction of phytochemicals remained a unique strategy in drug development processes. Variety of different solvents, either organic or agro-based solvent are being used to extract phytochemicals. The use of conventional extraction techniques using organic solvents greatly increase the cost of the extraction process. The design and implementation of green extraction approaches are currently a priority of natural product researcher and industries. Advanced methods such as microwave-assisted, ultrasound-assisted, pulsed electric field-assisted, and enzyme-assisted extractions, as well as pressurized liquid and supercritical fluid extractions are given more emphasis. Herein we aimed to briefly discuss these green extraction techniques and their effectiveness in extraction procedures.
