Dust technologies for magnetic fusion

2011
Abstract Interaction of dust particles with magnetic fusion plasmas opens new opportunities in the field of fusion technology. This study considers using the dust jets for emergency tokamak discharge quench and SOL/wall control. For the emergency quench, a large amount of dust in a kilogram range can be produced and injected in one or sequential shots. For wall conditioning and edge plasma control in tokamaks and stellatators, the amount of injected particles is comparable with the fueling rate. The contemporary tokamaks are compatible with injection of tens or hundreds of milligrams per second, while a few grams per second are acceptable for reactors.
