The empty sella syndrome: much ado about nothing.

The empty sella syndrome is probably the commonest cause of an incidental, radiologically enlarged pituitary fossa. Anatomically it indicates a fossa that is partially or wholly filled with cerebrospinal fluid. It is generally an innocuous condition but must be distinguished from sellar expansion due to pituitary tumour.
