Alumni Giving in the LGBTQ Communities: Queering Philanthropy
2013
Philanthropy scholars and practitioners have traditionally understood higher
education alumni giving through the experiences of people with majority
identities (e.g., White, middle-class, heterosexual, and male; Drezner, 2011).
With declining fi nancial support from donors, coupled with decreasing federal
and state resources for college and universities, advancement offi cers must begin
recruiting and retaining diverse alumni that they have previously not engaged.
Unfortunately, though, there exist barriers for advancement offi cers to create
meaningful relationships with alumni from marginalized communities.
