Alumni Giving in the LGBTQ Communities: Queering Philanthropy

Philanthropy scholars and practitioners have traditionally understood higher education alumni giving through the experiences of people with majority identities (e.g., White, middle-class, heterosexual, and male; Drezner, 2011). With declining fi nancial support from donors, coupled with decreasing federal and state resources for college and universities, advancement offi cers must begin recruiting and retaining diverse alumni that they have previously not engaged. Unfortunately, though, there exist barriers for advancement offi cers to create meaningful relationships with alumni from marginalized communities.
