Mortality rate and death cause of hospitalized children in Anhui Provincial Hospital between the year 2006 and 2011

2013
Objective Through a retrospective analysis of children's death causes in Anhui Provincial Hospital for the past six years, this paper focuses on the research of the main death causes, mortality rate and trend to provide a certain objective basis for children's health care and developing appropriate prevention and control measures. Methods This paper conducted a statistic analysis through a collection of data and material of 202 death cases of hospitalized children between the year of 2006 and 2011.Results There were 202 death cases of hospitalized children in Anhui Provincial Hospital from the year 2006 to 2011,with a male to female ratio of 2.06∶ 1 and the mortality rate dropping from 1.06% in 2006 to 0.49% in 2011.However,the number of deaths in hospitalized children was not reduced even if there was an overall downward trend of mortality rate. There were 106 death cases(with a proportion of 52.48%) of children who died within 24 hours of admission, with the ratio trend declining every year. The proportion of deaths of infants less than 1 year old was the highest, accounting for 57.43% of all deaths.According to systematic classification of disease, the top 5 death causes were:neonatal disease in 63 cases(31.19%),tumor in 31 cases(15.35%),injury and poisoning in 18 cases(8.91%),congenital malformations in 16 cases(7.92%),respiratory disease in 16 cases(7.92%),with different causes for different age groups.Children in different ages died for different reasons. For example, from 0 to 28 days mainly premature birth/low birth weight, from 28 d to 1-year-old mainly congenital heart disease, from 1 to 5-year-old mainly accidental injury, and from 5 to 16-year-old mainly leukemia. Conclusion Based on the characteristics of death cause of children from different age groups, different control measures should be taken while perinatal care and the prevention and treatment of infant diseases should be made.To prevent and treat children with congenital heart disease and cancer,to prevent or avoid the occurrence of childhood unintentional injuries, and to further increase investment in rural and primary health and improve children's living environment are crucial in reducing the fatality rate of hospitalized children.
