This training manual for health workers was prepared by the Nepal Family Planning/Maternal-Child Health Project and John Snow International as part of the USAID Integrated Rural Health/Family Planning/Maternal-Child Health Project. Its 23 chapters cover the following topics: health and traditional customs; home visits; family planning counseling; causes and spread of diseases; diarrhea and dehydration; immunization; acute respiratory infections; maternal health; breastfeeding; nutrition and malnutrition; Nepals demographic situation; reproduction; family planning; oral contraceptives; Depo-Provera; the IUD; laparoscopy and mini-laparoscopy; vasectomy; condoms; medicines; personal hygiene; cleanliness in the village and home; and common illnesses. The information provided on family planning is especially detailed. Following a discussion of the advantages of birth spacing the most common reasons for resistance to family planning and methods for motivating contraceptive acceptance the manual summarizes the field workers responsibilities for clients who accept the various contraceptive methods. These responsibilities include screening of women in whom the method is contraindicated through history taking instructions on proper use of the method presentation of side effects and ways to deal with them and follow-up. Health workers are urged to keep this manual once their training is completed for use as a reference tool.
