The effectiveness of roads policing strategies

The Joint Thames Valley and Hampshire Roads Policing Unit in the United Kingdom prioritizes the main contributors to road casualties, the 'fatal four', which include: speeding, not utilizing seat belts, drunk driving, and cell phone use. The Transport Research Laboratory conducted a literature review, looked at survey responses related to compliance, analyzed drunk driving offenses and enforcement data, and examined crash data to determine if enforcement in Hampshire and the Thames Valley is effective at reducing casualties. Recommendations for general policing strategy and recommendations that address each of the fatal four areas are provided.
