Acuity Measurement at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

2015
For the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis in Utrecht has a method been developed to measure the acuity of their department. Acuity is the amount of nursing care activity the patients require and is a leading factor in the utilization of the department's capacity. This research developed NAPSS, the Neonatal Acuity-based Patient Scoring System, which improves decision-making processes on the operational planning level and enables a simulation to assess policy decisions on the tactical planning level. This simulation introduces a best-fill method, where new patients are admitted to the unit which is busy, but still has sufficient space, rather than the most quiet unit. This leads to less patient rejections and a higher utility of the beds.
