The international famous manufacturers of plasma display pannel (PDP), for example, Japanese Pioneer, Hitachi, Toshiba, Fujitsu and Nippon Sheet and Chinese Taiwan's Formosa Plastics Optoelectronics, Chunghwa Picture Tubes and Karho Technology, etc, have declared to abandon their production of PDP for share shrinking in marketplace. However, the investment in PDP still increased in China mainland. Following up the PDP projects of Huaxian High-Tech Co., Ltd and Sichuan COG Display Devices Co., Ltd, the other enginnering involving PDP production invested by Anhui Xinhao PDP Devices Co. , Ltd began to construct in July 2009 in Hefei of Anhui Province of China. It's a tendency that China mainland is becoming both global manufacturing base and global technical center of PDP, but there is also much worry and still be the focus of worldwide eyes whether the PDP manufacturers of China mainland can compete over in future flat panel display market. The color displaying of PDP is obtained by exciting three-primary phosphors with vacuum ultraviolet radiation from Xenon or Xenon-Helium discharges. The main shortcomings of PDP is low luminous efficiency, low brightness and high energy consumption as super larger screen (such as 103 inch (261.62cm)) at present. The luminous efficiency of PDP is above all detemined by phosphors and also depends on the discharge of noble gas and driving circuit. Taking red phosphors for PDP as an example, the progress in the research of luminescent materials and the luminescence mechanisms under VUV excitation in recent years are systematically summarized. In addition, some forward-looking recommendations for PDP research and development are provided.
