The paper describes a method for designing a filled polymeric composition. The proposed method is based on a combination of numerical-theoretical approaches and those of experimental statistics. An analysis of the parameters of the stress-strain state of a joint to which a material is designed allows formulating the requirements on its main deformation, strength, and functional properties. To select components and develop the technology for a material to be obtained with corresponding properties in laboratory conditions, use is made of methods of experimental design. The combination of theoretical analysis and experimental development makes it possible to reduce the lead time and the cost of material design. The efficiency of this approach has been supported in practice by the development of a material for a stuffing box seal of a quick acting valve for a reactor operating in the conditions of high temperature and severe loading.
