Abstract Aim Amongst the many aspects of neuropsychological assessment diagnosing executive functions is the most complex one. The fact of many theories describing this construct and various methods used to measure it and describe it functionally contribute to it. Authors made an attempt to summarize national and world trends in this area. Perspective In order to assess different aspects of executive functioning many tests have been developed; however, using some of them implicates limitations connected with either artificial situation of evaluation, stressful and long diagnostic process or cognitive abilities self-rating. Amongst popular neuropsychological tests a method usually is chosen depending on aspects the executive functioning researcher deems important. Currently available assessment measures of executive functions can be divided into psychometrical tests, questionnaires, experimental evaluation, and virtual reality tasks. Authors also address the problem of ecological validity in executive functions assessment, which up till now was marginal in Poland. Conclusion There is a divergence between research conducted in Poland and abroad. Undoubtedly it is related with accessing methods that have polish adaptation. This fact is disturbing and has a negative impact on executive functions assessment contextualized both in academic and clinical aspects.
