Large-scale Zonal Flows During the Solar Minimum -- Where Is Cycle 25?
2011
Introduction During the solar cycle, as first reported by Howard and LaBonte (1980), bands of fasterand slowermoving material migrate from mid-latitudes to the equator, accompanying the activity belts. Global helioseismology allows us to follow the movement of these bands deep inside the convection zone. We now have nearly 16 years of continuous helioseismic observations from the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) and from MDI aboard SOHO (the predecessor to HMI), as well as some data from HMI.
