Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor as Adnexal Tumor Differential Diagnosis: Two Cases

2011
Abstract Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are uncommon mesenchymal tumors originating from the interstitial Cajal cells and are often discovered accidentally during endoscopic or radiologic examinations, because these tumors are usually asymptomatic. Therefore, on rare occasions GISTs may appear to be adnexal tumors on presurgical testing. Cases: This article reports 2 cases of Caucasian women, who were diagnosed with this unusual gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Results: Although preoperative sonographic and MNR diagnosis in each case suggested adnexal tumor, upon surgical intervention, a GIST was found in each woman. Conclusions: The awareness of a possible nonovarian tumor such as a GIST should be considered in a gynecologic consultation, especially those with an unusual clinic presentation, providing the optimal care of the patient.
