Corona stabilisation for high repetition rate plasma closing switches

1999
Repetitive switching employing corona stabilisation is an effective method for achieving higher PRF operation. Relatively simple designs are available for the self-closing and triggered modes of operation. The self-closing version of these switches has demonstrated good repetitive performance with lifetime capability in excess of 108 shots. The triggered version has shown reliable operation at a PRF of up to 20 kHz. The present work has indicated that by selecting the correct electrode geometry and material, it is possible to use corona stabilised switches to achieve performances similar to that of thyratrons at a fraction of the cost.
