52.5: Broadband Antireflection (BBAR) Nanostructure Contrast Enhancement (NCEF) Films For Electronic Optical Display Applications

2011
A new random, anisotropic, nanostructure, contrast enhancement film (NCEF) with super low reflection broadband antireflection (BBAR) performance was developed by 3M Company using a wide web roll-to-roll process. The high performance BBAR NCEF film can be made from triacetate cellulose (TAC), polyester, polycarbonate, polymethyl methacrylate, or many other substrates commonly used for electronic display applications. At normal incidence, a TAC based BBAR NCEF exhibits an average reflectivity of 0.1% measured in the visible spectral range 400-700 nm, and a total light transmission of > 97% is obtainable from single side nanostructured BBAR NCEF. Furthermore, BBAR NCEF film was shown to provide high light transmission at wide incidence angle with minimal optical loss making it well suited for viewing at wide viewing display angle. The roll format combined with the high performance characteristics of this BBAR NCEF film makes it an exceptional cost-effective solution to be implemented on most electronic display modules.
