Numerical Investigation on Corroded and Uncorroded Structural Steel Coupons

Objectives: Numerical investigations were done using corroded and uncorroded coupons, thereby for casting its prevention for the deterioration of structures. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Structural steel which is widely used is almost prone to corrosion in aggressive environments. Consistent replacement of the corroded member is uneconomical and therefore its yield strength has to be determined in order to estimate its reduced stresses of the members. This paper presents the numerical modelling of 4 coupons extracted from angle of 50x50x5mm and 7 coupons extracted from 80NB (nominal bore) mild steel sections subjected to different level of corrosion. The stress strain characteristics for both angular and tubular coupons were obtained from the analyses and verified with the experimental values. Findings: The stress strain characteristics for both angular and tubular coupons were obtained from the analyses and verified with experimental data. The analysis proved to produce excellent results with less than10% difference from its experimental results. Applications: This paper concludes with the numerical studies carried out on stress strain characteristic behavior of corroded coupons extracted from angle and tubular sections. The numerical modeling has been done based on the finite element method in which corroded coupons through experiment has been extracted and simulated using discretisation technique. Later compared and validated with experimental results obtained. This paper presented that due to corrosion in structural steel the yield stress had been reduced than in uncorroded coupons and the corrosion causes loss of mechanical strength on the specimen. The tensile test from the experiment and the numerical investigation provided excellent result while in comparison. It was observed that due to corrosion the physical property of steel was reduced and strength degradation occurred. Hence the numerical modelling technique could determine the stress strain characteristics of coupons successfully without any economic constraints.
