Plasma calcium as an indicator of reproductive condition in female blue grouse

Measurement of total plasma calcium as an indicator of reproductive status of live blue grouse (Dendragapus obscurus fuliginosus) hens was assessed. Total calcium showed a high positive correlation to weight of oviduct and development of ovarian follicles. Hens with ovaries in the slow recrudescence phase could be readily distinguished from laying hens or those with ovaries in the rapid stage of recrudescence.
